What I love is that Mozilla's servers is housed at my alma mater, Oregon State University! This project was done not far from campus a few years ago. I remember when it was first done. Looks kind of like open source aliens were trying to send us a message, or something.

I'm trying to teach my oldest about the virtues of open source, but only when I can get the buds to his iPod Touch out of his ears for long enough.

You know, Brian, you bring up a very important point. Being platform
independent is an increasingly essential skill.

A large part of my new job is the responsibility that comes with hiring new
employees. Truth be told: I'll hire a platform agnostic candidate any day
over one that's not.

On that note, I'm now feeling guilty and had better break out the family
Linux boxes.

I'm raising (grooming?) a "platform agnostic". She's been on Mac, Windows, Ubuntu, Sugar, RIM, etc. It shouldn't matter what platform and the more cross platform an app the better. OS is great, but I'd rather her have the ability to get the task before her done using what is available at the time.

I will definitely be talking Open Source with my kids- it's important for them to know about these things! I don't want them to be naive, and I want them to be able to give back to the people around them.
