This is a good point. I never thought of what was sacrificed in order for me tweet or blog more often these days. However since I have limited myself to a couple hours a day to use the internet after work, I suppose my reading habits and what was interesting to me a year ago is not so much now. I follow a few tweets these days, and blogging is more sporadic as well.

The 2 hour limit I set myself came about after noticing that I can’t remember the last time I read a book, or played with my guitar, and it is definitely detrimental to anyone’s social life. There is life beyond the computer folks!

I'd have to say I've subtracted Twitter a lot (although strangely, people still keep choosing to follow me) and my blog writing has slowed to concentrate more on issues I find important. I only have so much time to spend online, and I tend to prioritise on the fly focussing on what I can use in my actual classroom practice or school environment. I'm less and less interested on looking for where the fad bandwagon is headed that day - but I still need some reliable RSS feeds to keep tabs on that sort of stuff for me!

And why would this need to be discussed exclusively at NECC? Right here in this space is as good a place as any.

I am the opposite here. Over the past year, I have stopped following as many people on Twitter, I have deleted a bunch of subscriptions from my RSS reader, and I have written less on my blog. Some of these things have been good, and they certainly have increased my attentiveness to my kids and my children. I was just in too deep, and it has been very nice to pull back a bit and see if I missed reading many of the "must-read" blogs. I really haven't.

Balance is important. You have got to have moderation in all things, that is all there is to it.

Good point that we all need to consider. I'm using twitter more and reading feeds less; that's the only way I can avoid too much of the 'offline subtract' equation. We have to find balance that doesn't impact too much on the people in our lives who need us around and focused on them. Translation - my kids are important.
